In recent years, the expansion of semiconductor, mining, and industrial sectors has led to an increase in the volume of water used in each manufacturing process. At the same time, global demand for effective use of water resources and reduction of environmental impact has continued to grow. Paired with the implementation of stricter wastewater regulations, there is an imminent need for technologies that enable efficient water reuse.
RO membranes are filtration materials with microscopic pores that remove impurities from water and are widely used in applications such as industrial water production and wastewater reuse. Wastewater generated in industrial manufacturing processes contains many components that cause membrane fouling, such as organic matter and fine particles. Frequent membrane cleaning and replacement are therefore required to prevent deterioration in treatment performance, which increases operating costs and environmental impact.
The newly launched “PRO-XR1-X-LD” is a fouling-resistant RO membrane developed with a focus on suppressing membrane fouling, which is one of the major challenges in high-difficulty wastewater treatment. Through Nitto’s proprietary surface coating technology and optimized flow channel structure, the product helps inhibit the adhesion of organic matter and colloidal particles, which mitigates fouling-derived performance issues, while maintaining high impurity rejection. As a result, it enables stable treatment performance and efficient water recovery even with difficult wastewater applications. By reducing the frequency of membrane cleaning, the product can extend membrane life by approximately two-fold compared to that of conventional products, while helping reduce maintenance load and operation costs. Through the efficient reuse of water resources, the product also contributes to reducing the environmental impact of the overall manufacturing process.
Nitto’s Medium-Term Management Plan, announced in May 2026, positions “Green Tech” as one of its growth areas, which includes the separation membrane business.
Nitto will continue to contribute to the sustainable water-use in the semiconductor, mining, and industrial manufacturing sectors and the reduction of environmental impact by providing products and solutions tailored to the water treatment needs of each industry.
Since its founding in 1918, Nitto has globally provided a wide range of products and services as a high-performance materials manufacturer, including optical materials such as polarizing films used in display devices, circuit boards, industrial tapes, and medical-related products, based on its eight core technologies.
