Press Release 2011

Nitto Denko's global green standardization efforts awarded by the Japanese government

Japan's leading diversified materials manufacturer Nitto Denko Corporation greatly contributed to the publication of ISO 14051:2011, the first Japan-led environmental ISO standard which provides a framework for material flow cost accounting (MFCA), with the company's Sustainability Promotion Group General Manager Yoshikuni Furukawa having served as Secretary of the official working group at the International Organization for Standardization since 2008. For his indispensable support to the debut of this revolutionary new international standard on September 12, 2011, he received the prestigious Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Minister's Award of the fiscal year 2011 Industrial Standardization Awards. The presentation ceremony was held at Toshi Center Hotel, Tokyo, Japan on October 17, 2011.
MFCA is a powerful tool to reduce environmental impacts and improve business efficiency at the same time, by clearly grasping the situation of material losses. Originally invented in Germany, the method has been further developed in Japan with METI taking a lead. In addition to Mr. Furukawa's award-winning international efforts, Nitto Denko also gave a significant support to the MFCA development. Back in 2000, METI sounded Nitto Denko out on the possibility to serve as Japan's first MFCA adoption case. The company's production plant in Toyohashi, Aichi prefecture, was chosen to serve the role. Many MFCA apprentices from around the world have visited the plant. The latest visit was by Asia-wide representatives on September 13, the participants of a week-long workshop co-hosted by METI, Asian Productivity Organization and Japan Productivity Center.
Nitto Denko will further pursue its creative endeavors of green innovation, while achieving the manufacturing excellence with genuine consideration for the environment.
