Nitto Denko & Mitsubishi Rayon Received the First Large-Scale Order in Singapore for Microfiltration Membranes in Membrane Bioreactor Application
Japanese League Lands Big Membrane Order for Singapore's Largest Sewage Treatment Plant
Japan's leading diversified materials manufacturer Nitto Denko Corporation and its U.S. water treatment technology subsidiary Hydranautics (collectively "Nitto Denko Group") has won the order to install microfiltration membranes for membrane bioreactors (MBR), in the form of “HYDRAsub” membranes manufactured by Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. (MRC), in Singapore’s largest ever MBR sewage treatment plant, Nitto Denko Group and MRC announced today.
The order was received from Hydrochem (S) Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hyflux Ltd., a globally renowned Singaporean contractor specializing in water treatment-related business.
Scheduled to start up in the latter part of 2011, the treatment plant will be constructed within the compounds of Jurong Water Reclamation Plant located in the Jurong, western Singapore, with the treated sewage water to be reused by industries located on Jurong Island. Out of the total quantity of the membranes to be installed there, Nitto Denko Group will supply the amount equivalent to 45,000 ton/day as treatment capacity.
Back in February 2008, Nitto Denko Group and MRC had jointly entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with PUB, a branch of the Singaporean government responsible for water administration, for a joint development of wastewater reclamation technologies using separation membranes. It was the successful results of the demonstration tests of MBR technology which have been running in Singapore since June 2008 under the three-party arrangement, which has led to winning the order this time, the companies say.
The order landed this time is the first large-scale MBR-related item ever for Nitto Denko Group, and the Group will utilize this opportunity as a springboard to win expanded orders for combinations of microfiltration (HYDRAsub) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in the MBR market expected to enjoy increasing demand from now on.

Special Features of MBR Technology
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is the combination of a membrane filtration process with the conventional activated sludge process used for treating conventional sewage and industrial wastewater. Because it makes settling pond unnecessary, the MBR process allows the generation of clean water with a facility with a smaller construction area than conventionally. MBR process has the following advantages.
1. Reduced scale requirement: Conventional settling pond is unnecessary.
2. High degree of treatment: Membrane filtration makes it possible to obtain water of reusable quality.
