Japan's leading diversified materials company Nitto Denko Corporation (Nitto Denko) and Kowa Company, Ltd. (Kowa) have signed an agreement for the joint development of transdermal drug delivery patches based on the medicinal compound donepezil hydrochloride (DHC), an inhibitor of Alzheimer's disease symptoms, the companies announced today.
Under the agreement this time, the parties will conduct a joint development of DHC-based patches by utilizing Nitto Denko's technology platform for drug delivery patches, in order to respond to the hopes and expectations of the Alzheimer's disease patients, their families and care specialists.
Nitto Denko's business activities range over a broad range, from optical films for liquid crystal displays, automotive parts and seawater desalination membranes, to electronic materials and parts, environmental solutions and life science products.
Particularly in the field of transdermal drug delivery-type therapeutics, Nitto Denko had been ahead of the world in pursuing development work since the latter part of 1970's. With its R&D and production sites in Japan and in the U.S. where it has a specialized subsidiary Aveva Drug Delivery Systems, Inc. (ADS), Nitto Denko has established a superior production design technology for the therapeutic patches excelling in safety and stability, in addition to the technology for synthesizing adhesives optimally suited to controlled drug release into the human body.
