Nitto Denko Wins Prestigious Nikkei Award

For Water Desalination Membrane

1.4.2008

Japan’s leading diversified materials company Nitto Denko Corporation (Nitto Denko) has been selected to receive from Nikkei (Nihon Keizai Shimbun), a leading Japanese economic daily, a prestigious award for “SWC5”, the company’s high-performance reverse osmosis (RO) membrane element for seawater desalination, Nitto Denko announced today.

To be presented to Nitto Denko at the award ceremony scheduled in Tokyo for February 1, is the “2007 Nikkei Keizai Shimbun Award for Excellence”, which is the highest-ranked among the “Nikkei Superior Products and Services (NSPS) Awards”. Already in its 26th year, the NSPS awards sponsored by Nikkei are given every year to new products and services deemed to be especially superior, selected from among a total of some 20,000 that have been covered by articles in four Nikkei papers (Nikkei proper, Business, Marketing and Finance) for the year.

The selections are made by comprehensively taking into account such factors as how technically developed the product or service is, how cost-effective it is, how much it has contributed to corporate financial performance, how much it can expect to grow in the market, how original it is, and how much impact it is expected to have on industry and society.

Nitto Denko intends to continue contributing to solving the worldwide water shortage, by leveraging the global sales and marketing channels of Hydranautics, a U.S. membrane-based solutions subsidiary located in Oceanside, California.

Special Features of the “SWC5” RO Membrane Element

With most of the water available on earth being seawater, water actually usable by human beings is only 0.01% of the total, it is said. Characterized by a high water permeation rate together with a salt removal rate of 99.8% -- the highest level in the world, the “SWC5” RO membrane element selected for the top award this time is expected to continue with its valuable contribution to solving the global water shortage problem.
