Nitto Denko Launches China’s First Transdermal Bronchodilator Patch

Sale of “Amiaid” Patch Starting at Strategic Locations

7.7.2007

Japan’s leading diversified materials company Nitto Denko Corporation (Nitto Denko) has launched its commercial sale of transdermal bronchodilator therapeutic patch under “AmiaidR” trade name in China, the company announced today.

The Amiaid® patch to be applied directly to the human skin is the first type of product based on a long-acting ゚2 agonist (*) preparation to be sold in China, following its earlier introductions in Japan and Korea, the company says. Amiaid® is expected to work effectively in the treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) (**) for which the number of patients is rapidly rising in China.

(*) “β2 agonist” is a type of drug substances which bind to β2 receptors on the surface of the bronchial smooth muscle tissues and relax them, thus improving the respiratory function.
(**) “COPD” is a slowly degenerating type of illness in which the lungs undergo chronic dyspnea with exacerbating expiratory airflow obstruction. COPD generally includes those symptoms which have been called “chronic bronchitis” and “emphysema”.

Background of Amiaid® Development

Amiaid® transdermal delivery patch is based on a long-acting s2 agonist which was developed jointly by Nitto Denko and Abbott Japan Co., Ltd. for the first time in the world. In Japan, these patches to be directly applied to the patient’s body have been commercially available since December 1998, under the trade name of “Hokunalin® Tape”.

Due to its sustained efficacy and ease of use, Hokunalin® Tape has been accepted favorably by many physicians and patients as a major asthma treatment medication. Nitto Denko began clinical studies of the product in China in 2004 ? achieving successful results -- with the intention of making significant medical contributions. In China, the number of patients suffering bronchial asthma and/or COPD is on an increasing trend in step with her economic development.

Having filed a new import drug application to Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Nitto Denko was granted a license in November 2006 to sell and import the product under the trade name of Amiaid®.

The Amiaid® license provides for three dosages -- same as in Japan, namely, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 milligrams, with the indication for infants up through adults.

Excellent Features of the Product

Because of its controlled drug release profile of tulobuterol permeating through the skin into the bloodstream, Amiaid patch offers extended efficacy of bronchiodilation. It also offers once-a-day administration as well as the ease of administration for patients who have difficulty in taking medications in tablet form, such as the elderly and young children. With its administration before going to bed, the patch achieves the highest blood concentration during early morning, preventing the potential episodes of asthma. It also decreases incidents of adverse events due to a lack of blood concentration spike of the drug.

Marketing of the Product

Nitto Denko intends to market AmiaidR through Chinese pharmaceutical wholesalers to hospitals and pharmacies , with the target marketing area focused on the three metropolitan areas, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in 2007. The marketing area will be expanded sequentially to cities in the periphery of the three metropolitan regions and large cities in the internal regions.

Nitto Denko will explore the possibility of marketing in Chinese market various other transdermal delivery patches which Nitto Denko Group is marketing or developing in Japan and the U.S. The Group aims to further strengthen the marketing of its delivery patches in China, to establish the top brand position in that market also.
