Nitto Denko to Build New Optical Film Plant in South China

State-of-the-art Plant to Meet Demand from Large-screen LCD-TV Market

1.19.2007

Japan’s leading diversified materials company Nitto Denko Corporation (Nitto Denko) has decided to construct a new state-of-the-art plant for producing optical films in order to meet their growing demand in large-screen liquid crystal display (LCD) TV applications, the company announced today.

LCD-TV makers are accelerating their moves to set up production sites in China, Eastern Europe and North America, in order to accommodate the expanding global demand in the large-screen TV applications market. In China, TV set makers are concentrated in eastern central and southern China areas. LCD panel demand is projected to expand from now on, with those TV manufacturers embarking on full-scale expansion of their TV production capacities.

It is with such a backdrop that Nitto Denko has set up a new Chinese manufacturing subsidiary which would build the new optical film plant at Guangming Hi-tech Park in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, in order to meet not only the customer need for local procurement of parts and materials, but also demand for large-screen LCD-TV parts.

Background

Engaged in the manufacture and sale of various LCD optical films for applications such as polarizers as well as retardation films and polarizers with brightness-enhancing film, Nitto Denko has top share (about 55%) of the world market in this industrial segment.

It is a fact that LCD-TV market is moving on a continued growth path, with its volume having exceeded 40 million units in 2006 and is projected to approach 100 million units by 2008. Moreover, the mainstream TV screen size is expected to keep increasing, from the current 30" level to 40", and on to 50". Given such anticipated demand growth and screen size increase, LCD-TV makers are hurrying to enhance their production and sales setup based on their respective global business model.

Nitto Denko’s new plant will be endowed with the latest finishing and inspection technologies, whereby the finishing process will be equipment- intensive and automated rather than labor-intensive as in the past. Thus the headcount of plant workers will be kept to a minimum to realize a large-scale gain in productivity, while at the same time a setup would be established to handle the finishing of optical films for super-large-screen TVs that are 65Eor higher in size.

Too, although the plant would start its operation with the finishing of large-size LCD optical films, sequential upgrading of the production setup is also on the drawing board, such as introducing the film coating process.

Nitto Denko also intends to further boost its competitive strength in response to the moves by the various TV makers, by meeting the anticipated rapid expansion of optical film demand in South China with products from the new plant, and in North and Eastern Central China with output from the existing Nitto Denko (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.
