Hokunalin® Tape (tulobuterol patch), the world’s first long-acting transdermal bronchodilator, will include printing of "HOKUNALIN" on the tape surface

5.23.2006

Nitto Denko Corporation (Head Office: Osaka, President Masamichi Takemoto) and Abbott Japan Co., Ltd. (Head office of the Pharmaceutical Products Group in Osaka, President Zahir Lavji), and Maruho Co., Ltd., (Head Office: Osaka, President Koichi Takagi) have announced that Hokunalin® Tape (generic name: tulobuterol), a prolonged action b2 agonist preparation for the treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) co-developed by Abbott Japan and Nitto Denko and co-marketed by Abbott Japan and Maruho, will include printing of "HOKUNALIN" on the tape surface (see Table).

In Japan, Hokunalin Tape is one of 30 different transdermal products, which are used in the treatment of cardiovascular, gynecological and other types of diseases. The absence of printing of the drug name on the surface of many transdermal presentations could be an issue for patients, caretakers, and medical professionals. Without printing of the drug name, medical professionals and caretakers would not be certain which types of transdermal patches have been applied to patients. This might be an issue when they need to know which types of transdermal preparations have been used and what type of disease the patients have.

In order to avoid such situations, Abbott Japan Co., Ltd., Maruho Co., Ltd., and Nitto Denko Corporation have decided to print "HOKUNALIN" on the surface of Hokunalin® Tape. Printing the drug name will help increase awareness of patients, caretakers, and medical professionals (see below) and help avoid any confusion in situations.

Benefits for patients, caretakers, and medical professionals

  1. Patients and caretakers can confirm the type of patch used when applying it.
  2. The patch and liner are easily distinguishable.
  3. Medical professionals will know which type of transdermal preparation is being used, even when communication with patients is difficult, e.g., in emergency care settings.

Abbott Japan Co., Ltd., Maruho Co., Ltd., and Nitto Denko Corporation hope this modification will be useful for patients using Hokunalin® Tape, as well as medical professionals, and will continue to elicit the opinions of patients and medical professionals for further improvement of its products.

How to inform patients about the addition of printing of the drug name "HOKUNALIN":

  1. An "information sheet" will be included with Hokunalin® Tape as informational material provided from physicians, pharmacists, and other medical professionals to patients using the drug.
  2. A leaflet that helps medical professionals explain this modification to patients will be provided to pharmacists, physicians, and other medical professionals.
  3. The figures in "How to apply Hokunalin® Tape", which are to be provided to patients by medical professionals, will be modified to reflect the modification of the tape surface.
