Nitto Denko (based in Ibaraki, Osaka; president, Masamichi Takemoto) has developed a new high performance solid support for the synthesis of antisense drugs in a joint development with Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a US company that was the first in the world to succeed in bringing an antisense drug (a gene therapy) to market.
This newly developed product is essential in synthesizing oligonucleotides such as DNA and RNA-based gene therapies, and enables high-grade, high-yield synthesis of oligonucleotides.
In recent years, the life science field has focused on gene therapies that deliver genes and portions of genes (oligonucleotides) within a person’s body with the objective of curing diseases.
Antisense drugs are one of the most common gene therapies, and it genetically inhibits the synthesis of the protein that caused the disease. It is expected to be effective in curing diseases such as cancer.
Also, antisense drugs directly act on nucleic acid, the intended target, and are more effective with lower toxicity than the conventional low molecular weight pharmacological agents.
In light of the promise of this drug, Nitto Denko and Nitto Denko Technical Corporation, a dedicated research and development facility in the US, developed a high-performance cross-linked polystyrene beads for the synthesis of oligonucleotides in a joint development with Isis.

Proprietary bead design (composition, structure, etc.) enabled the high-grade and high-yield synthesis of oligonucleotides
The polymer beads jointly developed with Isis will be marketed through Nitto Denko’s wholly-owned US subsidiary, Kinovate Life Sciences, Inc. (established in January 2004).
The Company plans to expand into the next-generation gene therapy such as polymer beads for the synthesis of siRNA
