Heat-resistant surface protection tape that can be used in heat treatment manufacturing of high performance film to go on sale

Surface Protection Products Division, Tape-Material Business Sector

12.2.2002

Nitto Denko Corporation has just marketed heat-resistant surface protection tape for electronic devices, TP300 that can be used in the heat treatment manufacturing process. The tape is primarily used to protect the surface of high-performance film during heat treatment in the manufacturing process for touch panels. There is no marked increase in adhesive strength or constriction of film even when heat-treated for an hour at 150°C, and because it doesn' t have oligomer precipitation, it doesn' t dirty the manufacturing line. For products produced in a class 1000 clean environment, TP300 can contribute to rationalizing the high-function film manufacturing process and improve yield.

Background of product development

Touch panels often used in PDA, etc., require various type of processing in the manufacturing process such as resist printing and cutting of high-function film. Surface protection tape is applied and removed for each process to protect the surface of the high-function film during these processes. Heat treatment processes such as with etching however involve the following problems, so protective tape could not be applied:

  1. The adhesive strength of the protective tape increases markedly when heated and it becomes harder to remove.
  2. Adhesive tape contracts significantly when heated causing the high-function film to curl.
  3. Oligomer* in the base material of the tape appears on the surface when heated thereby dirtying the manufacturing line.

*Oligomer: Low molecular weight substance contained in polymer. We therefore wanted to develop a heat-resistant surface protection tape in order to solve these problems.

Product Characteristics

1)  Ensures easy peeling following the heat treatment process

Uses special acrylic adhesive to keep adhesive strength from increasing radically from heating to facilitate peeling.

2)  Minimizes contraction by heat, and keeps high-function film from curling.

Thanks to our expertise in manufacturing of protective tape, our tape controls the rate of contraction of PET base material, we have realized a tape that contacts at approximately the same rate as high-function film. This minimizes curling of high-function film and does not affect subsequent processes or quality.

3)  Prevents precipitation of oligomer by heat.

Special coating layer prevents precipitation of oligomer contained in the PET base material. This also prevents soiling of the manufacturing equipment by oligomer and contributes to higher production yield.
Transparency of the tape enables all processes up to inspection to be handled using the same protective tape, so there is no need to peel and replace tape. This dramatically simplifies the process for customers.

Applications

Surface protection and reinforcement for heat treatment during processing of high-function film and materials.
Examples: Surface protection for high-temperature dry printing, silk printing and etching.
Re-peelable reinforcement for ultra-thin materials in high temperature process.
